Medical Marijuana / Healthcare Law

Mr. Roberts has represented dozens of Michigan healthcare and medical entities, including pharmacies, Medicaid contractors, caregiver centers, medical billing services, and businesses handling Protected Health Information on a range healthcare related issues. He has also helped physician groups and other healthcare related entities structure their business to comply with the Stark law, the Anti-Kickback Statute, and other fraud and abuse laws. In addition, he has helped several healthcare companies get around state practice ownership restrictions through legally compliant consulting and management services agreements, which allows persons legally prohibited from owning a stake in a practice to participate in the profits.

Drawing on his experience as a business lawyer helping healthcare entities comply with state and federal healthcare laws, Mr. Roberts now helps Michigan medical cannabis businesses comply with the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act ("MMMA") and the Medical Marihuana Facilities Licensing Act ("MMFLA). Unlike many "marijuana lawyers", who normally practice criminal defense law or general litigation, Mr. Roberts is able to draw from his experience as a corporate healthcare lawyer to provide Michigan marijuana businesses top quality representation usually only reserved for large, multi-million dollar physician practices and hospitals. Mr. Roberts is also the managing partner of Renaissance Business Consulting, a compliance and consulting firm for Michigan cannabis and marijuana businesses.

He is the author of the definitive Business Owner's Guide to the MMFLA as well as several articles on the MMFLA. The guide explains the laws applicable to each type of medical marijuana business--including Class A, Class B, and Class C growers, provisioning centers (i.e. dispensaries), secure transporters, and compliance safety compliance facilities. The business owner guide, along with the articles, are available at www.renaissancebusinessconsulting.comIn addition to compliance work, Mr. Roberts has worked with the city of Detroit on city business licensing issues, site plan reviews, and special land use hearings, making him the perfect fit for business owners looking to start up a medical marijuana business in the city of Detroit.

Whether you are looking to apply for an MMFLA license, need help navigating local land-use and zoning regulations, or are forming a Michigan medical marijuana business or healthcare entity, Mr. Roberts has extensive experience in this area. The son of two doctors, he is familiar with all aspects of the healthcare and medical arena. He is able to represent healthcare clients on almost all legal matters related to healthcare entities and Michigan medical marijuana businesses other than medical malpractice litigation, including billing matters, and criminal defense issues.

Put simply, Mr. Roberts knows healthcare law. He has published numerous legal articles on healthcare related topics, including the following articles:
